A linen baseball cap is an investment. Unlike a cotton cap that you replace every season, a well-made linen cap — properly cared for — can last a decade or more, becoming more beautiful with every year of wear.
But linen does require a different approach to care than cotton. Follow these guidelines and your CacheMio cap will reward you with years of exceptional wear.
The Golden Rules of Linen Care
- Always hand wash — never machine wash
- Cold water only — maximum 30°C
- No bleach, ever — it weakens linen fibres
- Dry in shade — direct sunlight fades colour
- Never tumble dry — heat distorts the shape
- Reshape while damp — this is when the cap sets its form
Step-by-Step: How to Wash Your Linen Cap
Step 1: Prepare
Fill a clean basin or sink with cold water (maximum 30°C). Add a small amount of mild detergent — ideally one formulated for delicate fabrics. According to Good Housekeeping, a pH-neutral detergent preserves natural fibres far better than standard laundry detergent.
Step 2: Wash Gently
Submerge the cap and gently work the water through the fabric with your hands. Do not scrub, wring, or twist — this can distort the shape and stress the seams. For any stubborn spots, apply a small amount of detergent directly and work it in gently with your fingertips.
Step 3: Rinse Thoroughly
Rinse with clean cold water until all detergent is removed. Incomplete rinsing leaves residue that can stiffen the fabric and attract dirt more quickly.
Step 4: Remove Excess Water
Do not wring. Instead, gently press the cap between two clean towels to absorb excess water. The cap should be damp, not dripping.
Step 5: Reshape
This is the most important step. While the cap is still damp, reshape it by hand — round the crown, curve the brim to your preferred shape. Place it on a rounded surface (a bowl works well) to help it hold its form as it dries.
Step 6: Dry in Shade
Leave the cap to dry naturally in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight. Direct sun will fade the colour over time. Allow 12–24 hours for complete drying before wearing or storing.
Caring for the Leather Strap
The cognac leather strap on your CacheMio cap will develop a beautiful patina over time — this is a feature, not a flaw. To keep the leather in excellent condition:
- Wipe dry immediately after exposure to rain or sweat
- Apply a neutral leather conditioner once or twice a year — sparingly
- Never submerge the leather strap in water
- Avoid silicone-based products, which can clog the leather pores
According to The Guardian, quality leather that is properly maintained can last a lifetime — and the patina it develops makes it more beautiful, not less.
Caring for the Brass Hardware
The brass buckle on your cap will naturally develop a warm patina over time. If you prefer to keep it bright:
- Wipe with a dry cloth after washing
- Use a small amount of brass polish occasionally
- Avoid prolonged exposure to salt water
Storage: How to Keep Your Cap in Perfect Shape
How you store your cap matters as much as how you wash it.
- On a hook — hanging by the strap keeps the crown round and the brim flat
- In a box — if storing long-term, stuff the crown lightly with tissue paper to maintain shape
- Never crushed — do not stack heavy items on top of your cap
- Away from humidity — linen can develop mildew if stored damp
What to Expect as Your Cap Ages
Unlike cotton, linen improves with age. Here is what to expect:
After a few washes: The fabric softens noticeably. The slight stiffness of new linen gives way to a supple, comfortable feel.
After a season: The cap begins to conform to the shape of your head. The leather strap develops its first hints of patina.
After a year: The linen has a beautiful lived-in quality — soft, slightly faded in the most flattering way, uniquely yours.
After several years: Your cap has become an heirloom. The kind of object that tells a story.
This is what we mean when we say CacheMio caps are built to last.
